‘promote Alstonia boonei as an alternative for Triplochiton scleroxylon’
‘information on wood properties of plantation grown Milicia excelsa is needed’
‘impact of root anastomosis of Aucoumea klaineana on silviculture is worth a thesis’

Shortly after publication of the book ‘PROTA7(1): Timbers 1’, a large number of experts were invited to participate in a brainstorm workshop to discuss and agree on recommendations for research, extension, policy and the private sector. The workshop was held in Kumasi, Ghana on 25–27 November and was attended by 24 experts in the field of tropical forestry. The attendants came from different organizations in Botswana, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, DR Congo, France, Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Netherlands, Nigeria and Uganda.

The participants reviewed 280 major and minor species, considering their relevance for issues of policy measures, conservation needs, research gaps, thesis subjects, development gaps and candidate technologies.

The meeting was considered fruitful and a success. The results will be published in ‘PROTA Recommends…Timbers 1’, and are intended to be the basis for trying out promising species and technologies in small development projects in co-operation with grassroots organizations.
