Core Output
The Core Output of PROTA will be a comprehensive collection of about 7,000 review articles. Each article covers in principle one single species. This may cause some repetition of information in the texts on related species, but on the other hand it puts the emphasis on the differences and special characteristics instead of the similarities.
Exceptions to the rule of 'species' articles are cultivar groups that cannot unambiguously be assigned to a species (e.g. Pelargonium Rosat Group) or that are so distinct from other cultivar groups that they qualify for separate treatments.
The structure of all texts is basically the same although two formats will be used: an extended (‘major’) and a reduced (‘minor’) format. In the reduced format (about two-thirds of the species), the main headings (18) of the text are not subdivided; in the extended format, used for species on which more information is available, the main headings are subdivided leading to 30 headings.
For easy and wide access to the information, the PROTA Core Output is published as:
- an illustrated webdatabase with 7,000 review articles
- a book series at reduced price
- a CD-Rom series at reduced price
What we publish
PROTA Recommends...
Each time that the core output on a commodity group is completed PROTA produces recommendations through consultations in close interaction with the target groups on 6 domains:
- ‘Candidate species and technologies’ for rural development organizations and vocational training centres
- ‘Development gaps’ for private enterprises
- ‘Research gaps’ for the research community
- ‘Thesis subjects’ for institutions of higher education
- ‘Conservation needs’ for the research community
- ‘Policy measures’ for policy-makers.
These recommendations are published in the book series ‘PROTA recommends...’
Pilot Projects (PSPI)
Based on ‘Candidate species & technology’, small projects at community level were commissioned to demonstrate the benefits of diversification of plant resources. On average 5 projects will be realized per commodity group.
