Core Output
The Core Output of PROTA will be a comprehensive collection of about 7,000 review articles. Each article covers in principle one single species. This may cause some repetition of information in the texts on related species, but on the other hand it puts the emphasis on the differences and special characteristics instead of the similarities.
Exceptions to the rule of 'species' articles are cultivar groups that cannot unambiguously be assigned to a species (e.g. Pelargonium Rosat Group) or that are so distinct from other cultivar groups that they qualify for separate treatments.
The structure of all texts is basically the same although two formats will be used: an extended (‘major’) and a reduced (‘minor’) format. In the reduced format (about two-thirds of the species), the main headings (18) of the text are not subdivided; in the extended format, used for species on which more information is available, the main headings are subdivided leading to 30 headings.
For easy and wide access to the information, the PROTA Core Output is packaged in 3 forms:
- an illustrated webdatabase with 7,000 review articles
- a low-price book series
- a low-price CD-Rom series
How we publish
Special Output
Each time that the core output on a commodity group is completed PROTA will realize 6 special modules (published in 1 Special Product) through consultations and close interaction with the target groups:
- ‘Commodity Candidate Species & Technology’ (for rural development organizations and vocational training centres)
- ‘Commodity Development Gaps’ (for private enterprises)
- ‘Commodity Research Gaps’ (for the research community)
- ‘Commodity Thesis Subjects’ (for institutions of higher education)
- ‘Commodity Conservation Needs’ (for the research community)
- ‘Commodity Policy Issues’ (for policy-makers).
Pilot Projects (PSPI)
Based on ‘candidate technologies’, small projects at community level will be commissioned to demonstrate the benefits of diversification of plant resources. On average 5 projects will be realized per commodity group.
